coincidence?
Paul writes:
Sunday we went to Mass at Fourvierre which is a large basilica built high on a hill overlooking Lyon. It dominates the skyline, particularly at night when it's all lit up. The first Sunday of each month, they have a Mass in English in a small chapel to the side of the Basilica. Karen said it would be nice not to have to use the French missalettes that we have to buy every month.
We arrived early and I was sitting in the pew looking at all the plaques posted on the walls. There must be thousands of them throughout the church - memorials, testimonials, thanksgivings, etc. For example, I saw one that celebrated a guy passing his college exams. But then, just to my right was a very special one that caught my eye. If my French is correct, it was put up in 1921 celebrating the 100 year anniversary of the founding of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in this very chapel!
This order teaches at the all-boys Catholic school where I attended high school many years ago. Gulf Coast schools run by Brothers of the Sacred Heart include St. Stanislaus in Bay St. Louis, Brother Martin in New Orleans, and Catholic High in Baton Rouge. I did know that they were founded by Fr. Coindre in Lyon, but it was astonishing to come across this plaque in the midst of all the others. I'll have to send a copy of the picture to one of the brothers.
